Paul Gilbert: What Makes 3-String Guitar With All Strings Tuned to E the Best Instrument for ‘Glorious Shred’

Best known for being the co-founder of the band Mr. Big, and also a member of Racer X, Gilbert launched a solo career, for which he has released numerous solo albums, and featured in numerous collaborations and guest appearances on other musicians’ albums. Gilbert has been voted fourth-best on GuitarOne magazine’s “Top 10 Greatest Guitar Shredders of All Time”. He has also ranked in Guitar World’s “50 Fastest Guitarists of All Time” list.

In the latest chat with Guitar Interactive, Paul Gilbert showcased a peculiar addition to his live set – the ultimate “glorious shred” machine, a 3-string guitar with all strings tuned to E.

Clarifying why he did all that in any case, Gilbert noted:

“This actually came from doing a lick on a normal guitar but it was really hard to do. So to make it easier, I tuned all the strings to E. Then you can stretch out and get some kind of triad or arpeggio without having to move your hands. You can get these ferocious [plays these ferocious]… It’s glorious shred, open-string thing.”
